Dr. Rick Malter brings more than 46 years of personal and professional experience with Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)—a level of experience that is exceptionally rare in the field. Dr. Malter is also the author of The Strands of Health: A Guide to Understanding Hair Mineral Analysis, widely regarded as one of the most authoritative and comprehensive books available on HTMA. His expertise is internationally recognized, with Dr. Malter having trained practitioners throughout North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.
HTMA being a specialized laboratory test that requires far more than simply memorizing mineral ratios or following standardized protocols. It requires proper interpretation, extensive training, applied experience, and an understanding of the complex relationships between minerals, metabolism, stress, toxic exposure, and psychological and physiological health.
While the foundational work of Drs. Eck and Watts remains invaluable, the world has changed dramatically over the past 45 years. Today’s clients face far greater and more complex toxic exposures than those present when the original research was conducted.
Drawing on more than four decades of experience, Dr. Malter has continued to evolve and expand the application of HTMA to address the complex mineral patterns and health challenges people face today.
His training combines the original foundations of HTMA with 46 years of clinical experience, observation, and continued development—making it one of the most comprehensive and deeply experienced approaches to HTMA education available today.

Your course is exactly what I've been searching for, and I so appreciate you sending me links to the recordings so that I could immerse myself in it. Being offered an alternative to ATD is priceless - as a trained systems analyst I know how few can really think system-
- and I can see why nobody has helped me to heal in decades: I and everyone else have been seeing my body/mind as a linear system, and treating symptoms by symptom, which simply does not work in a dynamic system with multiple feedback loops.
In my journey with your course, I have gained a comprehensive understanding of its core principles. HTMA interpretation focuses on identifying mineral imbalances through levels and ratios, which reflect stress, energy production,
and neuro-endocrine functions. Beyond the foundational concepts, I learned about the historical context of HTMA development by Dr. Eck and Dr. Watts, including their split over the interpretation of ratios (e.g., pseudo inversions). This deepened my understanding of the need for flexibility in analysis, as rigid interpretations can overlook critical dynamics like mineral loss during stress or detox.
I've been taking Dr. Malter's HTMA course and I have been learning and loving it so much! Dr. Malter also shares various papers and books he's written that extend your learning and understanding of HTMAS. Every 1-2 weeks we meet over zoom to go over my questions and review the material. I love the passion Dr. Malter has on this subject and the way he's made connections with mineral status and the psychological effects. It's been really fun learning from him and I'm really glad I took this course to understand the importance of the body's mineral system!
I am excited to incorporate these learnings into my interest in canine HTMA, adapting the principles of mineral balancing to support the health and well-being of dogs through similar analytical and nutritional strategies. This course has significantly boosted my confidence in this subject, equipping me with the knowledge and tools to apply HTMA effectively in both human and animal.
The generational impact of copper toxicity, especially through contraceptives, highlighted the societal scale of mineral imbalances and underscored the importance of early intervention via HTMA to prevent long-term health issues. Additionally, the critique of medically oriented labs (like DDI) using wide normal; ranges emphasized the superiority of ARL/TEI precise ideals for meaningful health insights. I also learned how to navigate DDI results closer to their real numbers and interpretations by adjusting for procedural differences like over-washing, which affects Sodium and Potassium levels, and take the rest of ratios from there, it added very holistic aspect of learning.
Bless you for all you are bringing into the world with your writing and teaching. I can only imagine that you've had to learn to tolerate frustration looking back knowing that if only what you were writing about 20 years ago had been integrated into healthcare many more people would be so much better off today.
